ID3 tags for DJs: BPM, key, genre and artwork

Updated October 17, 2026

In shortTags are the info stored inside the file: title, artist, BPM, key, genre, artwork. Fill in at least those six fields. Prefer AIFF over WAV for lossless: it keeps its tags in every app, while WAV tags are read poorly by some.

The fields that matter in the booth

  • Clean title and artist, with no doubled "(Original Mix)" or site names.
  • BPM and key, in Camelot notation (8A, 9B) for harmonic mixing.
  • Genre, artwork, and a comment for energy or the moment in the set.

WAV, AIFF, FLAC or MP3

  • MP3 and AIFF keep ID3 tags everywhere: Rekordbox, Serato, Traktor, CDJs.
  • WAV tag support varies from one app to another.
  • FLAC keeps its tags well but older CDJ players cannot read it.

Keep your tags clean

  • Write info into the file, not just into your software's database.
  • DJWavPool fills in BPM, key, genre and artwork on every download.
  • You can also add your DJ name in the Grouping field to find your tracks.
