SoundCloud to MP3 320 kbps: is it really possible?
Updated October 17, 2026
In shortSoundCloud's public stream is compressed (roughly 128 to 160 kbps). Converting it to a 320 kbps MP3 makes the file bigger without improving the sound. A real 320 kbps file or WAV only exists if the artist uploaded the original and enabled downloads, or if you buy the track.
What the stream really contains
- SoundCloud plays a compressed version, not the file the artist uploaded.
- Re-encoding that stream at 320 kbps cannot restore the lost highs: the spectrum stays cut.
- On a big club system, the difference shows most in cymbals and vocals.
Where to find a real quality file
- The Download button enabled by the artist, which often gives the original file.
- The DJWavPool record pool, where artists upload their masters with their consent.
- Stores such as Beatport, Bandcamp or Traxsource.
Check what you downloaded
- Open the file in the DJWavPool analyser or in Spek.
- A sharp cutoff around 16 kHz gives away a 128 kbps source.
- A real master reaches 20 kHz or higher.
